I wear many hats, I am an Environmental Scientists, I am a Recreational Aquatics professional, I am an active member in my community, I am a mother and at the very base of everything, I am a woman. I wanted to create this website to draw attention to women and women in the business of athletics to talk about their stories.
My story isn’t very unique but I will tell it anyways. I am Canadian and I feel very lucky to be born a Canadian. Regardless of political views, as a Canadian woman, I can vote thanks to my suffragette great-grandmother, I can wear whatever I desire, I have access to clean air, clean water and good food, I can become educated and pursue a career in whatever I choose, I have access to health care, and every day I can wake up and know that for the most part my family and myself are safe. There are so many countries in this world, each and every one of them offering something truly amazing and I would love to visit them all, though Canada will always be my home.
I was born in a very small town in rural Saskatchewan in the 80’s where I lived with both my parents and my three sisters. I was very lucky to have lots of family close by for my sisters and I were able to spend time with my grandmother, aunts and uncles. Farming became a struggle due to low commodity prices and challenging weather so my parents had to make the difficult decision to move to Alberta to find work. My parents did find work and we grew up as a middle class family.
Being in Alberta was great for I was able to ski and snowboard in the mountains every winter, we could experience the Calgary Stampede every year where my mother is a Royal Alumnus from her days as a stampede princess of 1974 and I had access to freshwater bodies were I learned to swim and waterski. Our new place to live was an a small 80 acre plot bordering the boreal forest where we had a great supply of clean water and my grandparents on my mother’s side moved in next door. We raised a small herd of cattle, occasionally some chickens and pigs, some horses, cats and a dog.
I moved to Calgary following graduations where I worked in swimming pools and was able to embrace the urban atmosphere of the “Big City” Eventually I decided to pursue a career in environmental science which brought me to Saskatchewan where I met my husband and made rural Saskatchewan my home once again. As I have a passion for environmental related subjects, some of my blogs sidetrack there, thus the “other blogs” section.
My sisters and I have always been athletic and interested in competitions, specifically female related. Having had three sisters and no brothers, my sisters and I developed a strong attitude in regards to feminism and equality. Because of who I am, I want to use this blog to highlight women; tough women and athletic women.
